이번 주는 미국 중앙은행에서 FOMC가 열린다

FOMC란 The Federal Open Market Committee의 약자로 12명의 주요 인사들이 모여서 회의하는 자리이다

이 모임은 1년에 8번 모여 회의를 한다

The FOMC holds eight regularly scheduled meetings per year. At these meetings, the Committee reviews economic and financial conditions, determines the appropriate stance of monetary policy, and assesses the risks to its long-run goals of price stability and sustainable economic growth.

 

 연방정부 홈페이지에서의 FOMC설명은 위의 내용과 같다

경제와 금융상황을 리뷰하고 통화정책의 기조를 결정하는 회의이다

즉 돈을 풀 거냐 유지할 거냐 흡수할 거냐

그 양은 얼마나 될 것이며, 언제쯤 진행할 것인지 등의 결정을 하게 된다

이러한 결정을 하기 위해서 가장 신경 써야 할 지표 중 하나는 물가인상률이다

물가가 너무 오르면 시중의 돈을 쪼여서 돈의 가치를 높이면서 재물의 가치를 낮춰 물가를 안정화시키고,

경제가 너무 안 좋아서 물가가 떨어지면 돈을 풀고 돈의 가치를 낮춰서 상대적으로 물건들이 싸 보이면서 소비가 늘어나길 기대하는 등의 방식으로 통화정책을 결정한다

결국 달러의 기준금리를 결정하는 회의이다

 

아래 링크를 보면 인플레이션 수치가 높게 나왔으니 테이퍼링 속도를 높여서 금리 인상시기를 앞당기라는 기사 내용이다

Fed는 20년 3월부터 매달 1,200억 달러의 채권을 매입하고 있다

채권을 매입한다는 건 쉽게 말해 돈을 푼다는 뜻이다

하지만 지난달부터 매달 150억 달러씩 채권 매입을 줄이겠다고 언급했다

Fed to start tapering bond purchases later this month as it begins pulling back on pandemic aid

Tapering of bond purchases will start “later this month,” the policymaking Federal Open Market Committee said in its post-meeting statement. The process will see reductions of $15 billion each month -- $10 billion in Treasurys and $5 billion in mortgage-backed securities – from the current $120 billion a month that the Fed is buying.

 

간단히 계산하면 8개월 동안 150억 달러씩 줄이면 1,200억 달러가 되기 때문에 내년 7월부터는 금리가 인상된다는 이야기가 된다

하지만 11월의 소비자물가지수(CPI)가 최근 수십 년 동안의 최고 수치를 기록했기 때문에 더 빠른 속도로 테이퍼링 하여 금리 인상시기를 앞당겨야 한다는 언론이 많이 나오고 있다

 

오늘과 내일 있을 이 회의에서 금리인상과 테이퍼링에 대한 언급이 어떤 방향성을 가지고 이야기될지 모두의 관심사이다
